Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The blast was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence close to the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female got detained at the scene and a third person who fled subsequent to the explosion was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene showed the building reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the police reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think one of the siblings set off the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told reporters.

A propane tank had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our officers,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast comprised 11 other members of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of the state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.

The prosecutor thought the blast had happened on a story above the access point and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed personnel had “heard a whistle, probably the gas canisters being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
