Hardline Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Incoming Head of State.
In a decisive second-round vote, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Platform Focused On Security and Migration
Recognized for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely focused on promises to address growing insecurity and radically curb migration.
He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His policy ideas featured controversial measures such as erecting camps, barriers, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.

Numerous observers view Kast's success as aligning with a broader conservative shift in South America, coming after this year's political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Governing Lacking a Strong Majority
In spite of his decisive electoral victory, Kast is not expected to hold an overall majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are grouped together.
