Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in England's Ashes Team

England have chosen a 12-man squad just 48 hours ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected place.

Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the initial match to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch favor a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spinner.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, indicating there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter expected to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

The England coach had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five previous Tests.

During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only a small number to spin bowling.

Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable choice.

Spin Options Weighed

There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to offer some slow bowling while also strengthening the lower order.

However McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and perform well out here.”
