The Former Congresswoman Makes History as First Female Governor

Throughout two and a half centuries, Virginia has had 74 state executives, all of them men. This week, Abigail Spanberger broke this longstanding tradition by winning the election as the initial woman to hold the office in Virginia's records.

Centered Around Cost-of-Living Issues and Strategic Criticism

Ex- US representative and CIA case officer won with a campaign that focused on economic pressures and deliberately challenged the former president's agenda instead of the individual.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Hailing from in the Garden State on 7 August 1979, she moved to a Virginia community at age 13. Her dad was an army veteran who later worked in law enforcement; her mother was a nurse and community helper.

She attended the Virginia's flagship university, receiving a degree in French studies. After graduating, she had a short stint as a substitute teacher before turning to a life of service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps and I did,” she shared with attendees at a rally in coastal Virginia over the weekend.

Government Roles

At the federal agency, she worked cases involving drugs, abusers and money launderers. She executed search and arrest warrants, often being the only woman on the operation squad. She then entered the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on counter-terrorism cases, serving undercover and abroad.

Life Change

In 2014, she and her spouse, an engineer, reached a career crossroads. Living on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a world map and asked their eldest daughter, then in elementary school, where they should go. Virginia, she replied, because “everyone we love lives in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we chose to shift from a national duty, to local engagement because she was correct. Those dear to us are in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in her home state, she joined an advocacy organization, which works against gun violence, and started a youth group. In that period, she decided to campaign for the House, which others told her was a “impossible task” because no Democrat had secured the seventh district in decades.

“But I witnessed what Donald Trump was doing with his actions and how he was dividing communities. And I saw my member of Congress consistently work against the Affordable Care Act. And I knew I had to take action. So spoiler: I succeeded.”

Centrist Approach

In Washington, she rapidly became part of the moderate Democrats, a alliance of centrist and budget-conscious Democrats. She concentrated on lower-profile issues: bringing broadband to rural areas, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She earned a standing for collaborating with Republicans and was consistently rated as the most cooperative member of the Virginia delegation. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt turned off moderate voters, warning her party against ideological slogans that could be used against them in contested districts.

The "Mod Squad"

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and an ex-navy pilot, she was labeled a member of the “centrist alliance” in opposition to the left-leaning “group” of the New York representative.

Run for Governor

In that autumn, she announced she would step down for a another term and would rather run for governor in 2025.

Her campaign centred on ideas of public service, advocacy for education and infrastructure and defense of governing systems. Her intelligence experience gave her authority on defense issues and she described public service as a vocation rather than a career.

Win Over Opponent

This helped her to overcome Republican opponent her challenger's attacks on cultural issues, notably the claim that Spanberger is an radical on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who maintained that communities should decide whether transgender students can participate in competitive sports, cast her rival as the candidate more out of step with the middle of the Virginia electorate.
