The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate personas, each with unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
