A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials announced on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will grace the courts again at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Australian Summer

The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I am thrilled to be back in the country and looking forward to playing during the Australian summer," Venus stated. "I have experienced so many incredible moments there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Setting a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the most senior female player to take part in an Open's main draw, surpassing the mark formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the opening round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
